I have to say that i would not have looked at this book, if Ed Sheeran hadn't recommended it. I have to say I was not disappointed. Yes, it's the modern version of David Copperfield. I have to say once you started reading, the main character Demon drew you in. My heart sunk for him, right from the start of his birth. He lived in a trailer with his mom, despite not having much,he was on the ball when it came to his mom. Then arrived the new man in their lives, what a nasty human. When his mom had overdoses herself, which I think her new husband had a hand in it, then losing her & then the baby, it played on Demon's mind as he oftened made reference to the baby. I wanted to hold him, because it was nobody wanted him, it broke me, how could a child be treated like this. So much happened to him, especially when he had to go without food at the Cobb's household. When he eventually got ro get away with all his money, then i thought he had the opportunity to have sort of a normal life, yet the woman whom followed into the restroom, & then caused a scene & lied about the money, once again Demon lost all he had saved up for. I thought things would look up when he eventually arrived at his Dad's mother's home. Let's say it didn't last, he was then moved to another place where Angus came into his life along with coach, & the savoury character of U-Haul. Things started to look up for him, he had talent, especially with his art work. Then when the injury happened on the pitch, knew he would not be the same. I really thought that at a young age he saw his mom & drugs that he would stay away, yet he wanted the pain to go & yes he became addicted. Even more so when Dori came into his life. He always had to look out for everyone, yet who looked out for him? He had a dream of going to the ocean, yet he never got there. In his life he meet so many different people & their personalities, i wa so fond of Tommy, but I knew that Fast Forward was such a dodgy human. Demon had a caring heart & soul even when Angus was in a difficult situation with U-HAUL. You can't read this book & not feeling for Demon, it made me think how many children are going through a similar life, yet all they need is ONEgood break & for someone to believe in them. It took alot when in the end but he made the changes & yes in the car was faithful Angus. I will pass on this book to my little book group. Thank you Barbara.

Babara Kingsolver's latest novel, Demon Copperhead is a timely and truly remarkable book. It is totally unlike her other novels in terms of content, with harrowing descriptions of what is means to be addicted to drugs, and her anger at the exploitation of the vulnerable is palpable. Everyone should read it.

A modern retelling of "David Copperfield" (and in fact, I often found myself calling it Demon Copperfield instead of its correct title), set amid the Opioid crisis in the Appalachian Mountains of the U.S. Heartbreaking and harrowing, but ultimately triumphant. Yes, it's long and it demands your care and attention, but it's also well worth your time. It's a worthy winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This novel will stay with me for a long, long time.

A brilliant read, both heartbreaking and humorous. I loved the main character and just wanted to wrap the young Demon in my arms and remove him from the people and situations he found himself him. The way he describes them is just wonderful, you can feel the atmosphere. " I sat still, trying to be nothing and nowhere, watching my minutes tick out". There were so many bits I went back to re-read. Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible is one of my favourite books and this one is now up there too. Full of injustice but also hope. A beautifully written book that I will read again. Highly recommended. With thanks to Faber & Faber for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Amazingly brilliant. Kept you wanting more, couldn’t put it down! Loved the story, enjoyed all the references to the Dickens novel. Would recommend to read!
