Reviews: Deception (16)
“Emotional, tense and twisty”
(Hardback)
An emotional rollercoaster that doubles as a powerful critique of the US healthcare system, Deception follows two parents desperate to save their son but unable to afford the life-changing surgery he needs. Through their dual perspectives, readers are challenged to consider just how far they would go to save someone they love.
Dark, twisty, and packed with tension, the novel explores the emotional and moral boundaries its characters are willing to cross. What I loved most were the two central characters who were messy, flawed, and often faced with impossible decisions. Their imperfections made them feel incredibly human and relatable. But also, you just didn't know how they were going to react on the next "Level."
A gripping thriller that I devoured from start to finish, Deception showcases Jack’s growth as a writer. His ability to make readers think, feel, and empathize with such difficult dilemmas is what makes this book (and all of his books!) so compelling.
“The Next Level!”
(Hardback)
A fantastic, action packed thriller, which delivers a punch like no other!
With themes reminiscent of The Running Man, The Fugitive and The Hunger Games, but with a emotional heart that left me speechless, I was left completely blown away by Deception and the rollercoaster ride of a journey it took me along!
How far would you go to safe your child?
Emma and Miles are now out of options with there son in desperate need of a heart transplant, but with impossible costs continuing to mount and America's privatised healthcare system, they simply cannot afford it and need a miracle. Then comes the offer from a shadowy organisation known as The Levels which could change everything. The Levels will pay for the surgery as long as Emma and Miles complete a series of tasks, each one a crime which will grow harder and more dangerous with each passing level. Along the way they must also fight off fellow competitors and undertake the unimaginable to win the grand prize, but how far are they prepared to go to safe there son and how much of themselves are they prepared to lose along the way!
Deception is astonishing in its sheer scale of imagination with writing that is fast, rich and at times so full of heart I was genuinely moved and left on tenterhooks by its characters decisions. The plight of Miles and Emma fighting to safe there son's life and forced to undertake such depths after being let down by a privatised healthcare system is heartbreaking in its emotional intensity and opens the story up for further exploration, whilst providing the motivation to do the unthinkable and when the action comes the reader is left on a knife edge wondering where the story will go next in this amazingly unpredictable thriller.
Jack Jordan knows his craft and each new thriller adds more scale to the one before, but in Deception he may have surpassed himself with a blockbuster with a very human heart and a emotional rollercoaster simply begging for a television series or a Hollywood movie!
A simply epic and heartbreaking thriller which became my total obsession and didn't disappoint on any level.
Definitely deserves more than 5 stars!
THE NEXT LEVEL INDEED !!! OUTSTANDING!!!
“Another winner from the king of the moral dilemma”
(Hardback)
The king of the moral-dilemma thriller is back with another hit to keep you on the edge of your seat. Emma and Miles’ nine-year-old son, Ryan, needs a heart and lung transplant to save his life. But they live in the USA, where the cost of his healthcare is financially crippling. They are out of options and have no way to pay for the surgery he needs. But hope then comes in the form of an offer from a shadowy syndicate known as The Levels. They say they will give them the exact amount of money they need in return for them completing a series of tasks. The catch? The tasks are all crimes. With no other option, Emma and Miles decide they have no choice but to play. As they move up the levels the stakes increase, as does the payout. and they quickly find that the line between what’s right and wrong blurs. Then they find themselves faced with the ultimate question: how far will they go to save their son’s life?Jack Jordan has done it again! This man seriously never misses and I feel like his books just get better and better. Jaw-dropping, propulsive and unbelievably tense, Deception is an action-packed thriller with an emotional heartbeat. It’s an impossible dilemma. And that’s what makes it so addictive. It will shatter your nerves, have your jaw on the floor and break your heart all at the same time. And I loved every minute, binging it in just two sittings.Exquisitely written, expertly choreographed and perfectly paced, Jack had me in his thrall from start to finish. Emma and Miles are great protagonists. They are the everyman and woman, people we can see ourselves in and relate to. My heart shattered as Emma sat by Ryan’s bedside trying to find ways to save his life and for Miles as he worked to breaking point to try and pay for it all. Jack asks the questions I was thinking about private healthcare, exploring how a civilised country can treat their most vulnerable that way and prioritise profit over human life. By the time the offer from The Levels comes, you’re as beaten down and desperate as Emma and Miles and totally understand why they are considering it. After all, what parent wouldn’t do whatever it took to save their child? These are good people in a dire situation and it is easy to understand how they end up doing bad things. It is a reminder that things aren’t always black and white and that so much of life lives in the grey.An astonishing masterpiece that will leave you breathless, this is a must-read for all thriller lovers.

“Jack Jordan at his best!”
(Hardback)
I am a huge Jack Jordan fan and I never thought he could top his previous titles, and wow he has! Deception is absolutely brilliant! It is gripping, compelling, jaw-dropping, tense, chilling, propulsive, brilliantly written and I could not put it down. Full of moral dilemma’s, you are taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and I was routing for Emma and Miles throughout but I was not expecting the last few chapters to happen at all - this is a book (and premise) that will stay with me for a very long time. It is full of action, suspense, fast-paced, I really enjoyed the dual narrative chapters and left me wondering and thinking what would I do if I was in this situation….. This is thriller writing at its absolute best, and I cannot wait to see what the author writes next because I do not know how he can top this and his backlist - how exciting to have this to look forward to!
I want to say a huge thank you to the publishers for sending me an advanced reading copy, I feel very lucky and will treasure it!
“A gripping "what would you do?" thriller from a master of the genre”
(Hardback)
Jack Jordan – “the master of the moral dilemma” – has done it again! I've previously read and enjoyed both Conviction and Redemption, particularly the latter, which is probably the only thriller that's ever left me in tears.
In Deception, Jordan treads familiar territory in the way he does best, once again centering characters who face an impossible situation that tests their morality. This time, he poses the question: how far would you go to save your child?
That's the dilemma facing Emma and Miles, a couple struggling to make ends meet while their hospitalized son awaits a life-saving transplant. When a shady organization offers them the money to cover their extortionate medical bills, it seems they may have finally found a light at the end of the tunnel. The catch? They must commit a series of increasingly dangerous crimes...
Reading Deception was such a wild ride. I really felt for Emma and Miles’ predicament and their desperation to save their son. It will have you questioning how you would navigate their situation, and what you would be prepared to do for your loved ones.
One of my favourite types of thrillers is the kind that weaves social commentary into a gripping plot, and Jordan does that so well here, highlighting the inequities of capitalism and the American healthcare system.
If you're after a fast-paced thriller that's tense, emotional, and built around a thought-provoking “what would you do?” scenario, Deception is a must-read.
