Reviews: Dear Evan Hansen (8)
“Moved me to tears”
(Hardback)
by Sharon, Bookseller at Waterstones Gloucester
I received a reading copy in exchange for an honest review. This book was wonderful. It's about the awfulness of high school and being alone in a crowd and paralyzed by 'what ifs'. Evan's strange and unintentional lie helps him find his voice. Which is incredibly important because people rarely say what they're really thinking or feeling- particularly when they're burdened with mental health issues. The web of lies gets more and more complex and agonising and as a reader you experience the dichotomy of simultaneously feeling both sorry for and horrified by Evan's behaviour. I was on tender hooks waiting for everything to unravel, the resolution however was hopeful - not sugar coated or fluffy, but not brutal or glamorous either. Superbly written, complex, messy and realistic characters. Highly recommend.
“Wonderful”
(Hardback)
by jean
Dear Evan Hansen, I'm old enough to be your grandmother and before I read this book I had never heard of you or your musical. I hadn't even realised it was a YA book. In a lot of positive ways it reminded me of bits of "lovely bones" and the diaries of Adrian Mole. You are a wonderful character and speak across generations -you have certainly found a place in my heart and I wish you many amazing days.
“Yet to read”
(Paperback)
by Chloe Wood
I am yet to read this book, but I own it and it sits on my shelf for me to read after I have finished reading Lock and Key. I have however watched the musical and they storyline is brilliant! Definitely worth the watch and I am certain it is worth the read.
“Beautiful”
(Paperback)
by Rose Starmer
I really wanted to see the musical, but couldn't,so I thought I'd buy the book instead. It was beautiful and incredible and every other good word.
“wickedly funny”
(Hardback)
by Ciara Smyth
Wickedly funny and sometimes morally bereft but in a good way. I really enjoyed this though I've never seen the musical, nor did I really know anything about it. So the plot was a complete surprise for me. I often complain that YA doesn't always allow for characters who do truly terrible things, there's a puritanical moralism lately and I often think some of my favourite YA books wouldn't be published today because they're darkly comic and could be construed as insensitive. Evan Hansen is from this family of books and so I suspect it will divide opinion but the people who love it are going to adore its black wit and the beating heart underneath.
