Reviews: Dear Enemy (1)
“Dear Enemy”
(Paperback)
This is the follow-up to the lovely Daddy Long Legs book, this time told from the point of view of Judy's best college friend, Sallie McBride.Sallie has come to be the Superintendant of the John Grier Home at the request of Judy, and carefully details her experiences there to Judy in a series of letters. She also addresses notes to Dr MacRae (the enemy of the title) and to her suitor in Washington. The story is not quite so charming as Daddy Long Legs but is still lovely and engaging and it was nice to read about Judy even through the letters of somebody else. It was nice to meet Sallie as an adult woman finding her way after college too.The book has some old-fashioned ideas about the best way to care for the mentally ill and those born of alcoholics and epileptics, so I would want to discuss this carefully with any children I passed this book on to.And as a note to that effect, I would never buy this edition (The Echo Library) as a gift. The book I received has a different (not nice) green cover and contains no illustrations at all. It has a very unlovely appearence of a school science book and I was disappointed with its appearence when it arrived. The absense of illustrations is disappointing as they were so charmingly a part of Daddy Long Legs and are referred to thoughout Dear Enemy too. This is not an edition to be given as a gift but is a welcome addition to my library as I love the characters (especially Judy) very much and am pleased to read about her life since college.
