Reviews: David Mitchell: Back Story (3)
“The story of a back and a back story”
(Hardback)
It is impossible to read it in any voice other than David Mitchell’s. Fans of his panel shows, soap-box YouTube channel and ‘10 o’clock Live’ will understand what I mean by his voice. It is truly unique. The book reads as one conscious thought as David takes us on one of his many walks around London. He reflects upon important moments in his life including his stage début and graduating from Cambridge University. This book is an eye opener; the personality seen on the small screen is a self-caricature, a go-to comedy persona. The David on the page is not as ‘messed up’ as the David on the screen, he is normal, shock horror.
“A celebrity autobiography to love!”
(Hardback)
One of those fantastic autobiographies that reads like the author is having a conversation with you. This is funny, interesting and left me hoping that Mitchell decides to make a habit of writing more than sketches. A great read not just for fans but also for anyone with an interest in comedy or comedians in general.
“Honest and funny, a good read”
(Hardback)
I do not usually read biographies, however I do enjoy watching David Mitchell on quiz shows, and love his sense of humour, so decided to give this a go. I wasn't disappointed. This is an honest and well written biography, written in an interesting way, with anecdotes related to his walks around London as therapy for a back problem. Sounds odd, but it works. At times he seems unbelieving in himself, and clearly had a tough time at school, which is a bit melancholic, however, not surprisingly the humour shows through, I thoroughly enjoyed the description of the boiling of a lobster in a caravan in France. I was touched by his extended love affair with his wife, Victoria. His book shows that it can certainly be tough getting to the top in show business, but I'm glad he persevered! I would certainly recommend this book.
