This was easily the funniest book I've read in a long time - I was laughing from the opening line, and totally hooked into the character. Darryl has a really unique narrative style, framed as blog/journal entries, which can feel like a stream-of-consciousness inner monologue, but is still completely engaging and compelling. Darryl is such a singular character, with a singular worldview that you just have to know more about. It's an irreverent, raunchy book that doesn't shy away from explicit depictions of BDSM practices, so do be warned! But beneath the surface, this is a story with a whole lot to say about gender, sexuality, identity, and mental illness. There are some real thought-provoking lines, and (compared to how much literary fiction I've been reading lately) I have annotated Darryl more than any other book in recent memory. All of the characters are incredibly well-drawn, and some are genuinely scary. The ending was pacy and thrilling, things really ramped up from the first half of the narrative where we got a slice of Darryl's daily life. I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone looking for something a little different, laugh-out-loud funny, and packed with truly astute insights into masculinity, femininity, and desire.
