“Addictive and Terrifying”
(Hardback)
Heart-pounding, breathtaking and terrifying!
A shiver while you read relentless tale that takes you on a thrill ride that doesn’t stop until the last page.
I was enthralled from start to finish. The fear doesn’t let up, it is instant and grows steadily with the turn of each page and refuses to stop.
The story is brilliantly written, atmospheric and utterly, UTTERLY thrilling.
I had never heard of this author before but now I’m a fan.
Unarguably well deserving of five stars (although I’d value it much higher).
This truly is an unforgettable experience that the author cleverly brings you alongside the terror.
“Loved it!”
(Hardback)
I really loved this book and could not put it down! It's a total masterclass in atmospheric dread, blending small-town thriller vibes with supernatural horror and those "real-life" scares that actually stay with you. The story is told through multiple perspectives, and I loved how flawed and complex everyone is. It has so many layers as you slowly find out why they all grew apart and the horrors they were involved in back in the day.
This story has many layers. We meet the classic "bad guy" who does all the wrong things for his own reasons, but he might not be Hazel's biggest threat. Hazel has a condition called a teratoma (a tumor made of hair and teeth), and without her medication, her "third sister's" voice becomes very loud...
Hazel wants to meet up with her sister, Cathy, for the first time in half a decade, but she’s a no-show. Cathy didn’t expect a perfect reunion, but she didn’t expect Hazel to just vanish, either. Something isn’t adding up. The town is whispering about a threat in the restless woods, and like the old saying goes: If you go looking for trouble, you just might find it...

“Disturbing”
(Hardback)
Wow this book was creepy! I read an eARC of this book on NetGalley so thank you to the author and the publisher.
I couldn’t put this book down! It was utterly compelling and unnerving. What the author did was so clever, creating a monstrous villain… but then something else that’s not quite right. I will say as little as possible on plot to avoid spoilers as I loved how this unravelled. In a nutshell, a woman goes to housesit for her parents in her Cornish hometown as her divorce finalises. She’s not in a great place, is trying to reconnect with her estranged sister, and things don’t go to plan.
So avoiding spoilers.. what made this so fascinating? Little details like the mushrooms! The main character is an amateur mycologist and this was a fun feature of her personality whilst also adding some creepy factors. Then, the line between good and evil. There’s definitely a villain, but it’s hard to trust anyone in this story, there’s a lot of morally grey, or people holding guilty secrets. Also, the unlikely allies. Because of the situation certain characters find themselves in, they have to join forces with people well outside their normal spheres.
My first book from this author but I was so thoroughly engaged by this book I’ll definitely be back for more!

“Fab read”

Book Review: Dark Is When the Devil Comes by Daisy Pearce
Publication Date: 28 April 2026
This is the kind of horror that doesn’t just creep up on you—it settles under your skin and stays there.
Dark Is When the Devil Comes is a tense, claustrophobic blend of psychological thriller and slow-burn horror that thrives on unease rather than shock. From the moment Hazel steps back into her fractured past, there’s a lingering sense that something isn’t right—and that feeling only intensifies as the story unfolds.
What begins as a seemingly familiar kidnapping scenario quickly unravels into something far more disturbing. The true strength of this book lies in its atmosphere: oppressive, eerie, and constantly shifting. Idless Wood feels alive in the worst possible way, and the farmhouse setting becomes a suffocating trap not just physically, but mentally.
Hazel is a compelling protagonist—flawed, vulnerable, and increasingly unreliable as the tension escalates. The layered relationships, particularly with her sister Cathy and friend Suzie, add depth and emotional weight, grounding the horror in something real and personal.
The pacing is relentless without feeling rushed, and just when you think you understand what’s happening, the narrative twists into darker territory. This isn’t just a story about a monster in the woods—it forces you to question where the real danger lies.
If you enjoy horror that leans into psychological dread with a creeping, almost suffocating tension rather than outright gore, this delivers. It’s unsettling, sharp, and quietly terrifying.
A deeply eerie read that lingers long after the final page.

“A fusion of psychological thriller thriller and horror”
(Paperback)
4.25-4.5⭐️
Although an acclaimed horror writer this is my first book.
It starts very character driven with quite lyrical prose to set the scene. You really get a feel for the surrounding pine woodland. Our main character is Hazel newly single and emotionally raw. Hazel returns home to meet up with her estranged sister Cathy. There’s also Suzie her school friend. Then there’s the antagonist who is revealed early on so the mystery is why rather than who.
Hazel is an amateur mycologist (studies mushrooms) which is relevant as it’s what gets her into trouble. I loved the saying that all mushrooms are edible, some only once!
Hazel tells the story of her current situation, alternating with giving the reader the back story of her youth. Then we have Cathy and Suzie who tell how they are searching for Hazel.
The tension builds well, Suzie was by far my favourite character.
This is more than a tip dip into the genre but it’s not extreme horror by any means and the author sold it to me well. There’s a very interesting plot device utilised. I’ll certainly look at more by this author.
You don’t need to be a dedicated horror reader to enjoy this book.
