“Is it the house or is it her?”

Dark Is When the Devil Comes by Daisy Pearce Narrated by Catrin Walker-Booth Horror wimp reporting for duty and I actually mostly enjoyed this one. I did have a nightmare where one of the main bad characters was attacking me and I was screaming and no one heard me and I couldn't move. Fun times (not really) and it was like the book came with this extra special nightmare bonus. Twenty nine year old Hazel has returned home after a failed marriage and more things that aren't clear until later in the book. I get the idea she's the good child, that her parents may have favored her, while her older sister Cathy might have been the troublemaker? But it's sort of murky and things seem messed up all around with these two sisters who have been estranged for five years. Hazel certainly isn't good at making decisions and one of her decisions lands her in the worst of situations. Definitely nightmare fodder but it turns out that might be Hazel's life anyway. Is Hazel the nightmare? Something dark and deep lurks and it's not going away. I had such sympathy for Hazel and for Cathy and her two sons. Those kids are the best, as good as kids can be when they are just kids and they have a messed up mom and no dad. There will be a very old and creepy house and horrors surrounding it. A man slaughtered his family long ago but it seems no one can find the house anymore. That house has more life and death in it than is good for any house or person. This story is a living nightmare and I seemed to understand it and the actions of the characters more than I do with most horror stories so that is a big win for me. The narrator allowed me to sink into the story without thinking about just one person doing the narrating and that's a good thing. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this ARC.
