It's been fifteen years since this original doctor who spinoff was released on DVD by Reeltime pictures. Now we have this novelisation by the original author David j Howe done in the style of the classic, and recently resurrected, target doctor who books range. As a target styled book it's brilliantly done. The retro 70's style cover is gorgeous and the spine colour matches the original books perfectly. Even the interior is nigh on perfect with paragraph breaks done in the same style. I also liked the changing face of Kate lethbridge-Stewart which matches the changing face of the doctor section in the old target books. This book features a bonus 8 page colour photograph section from the making of the original drama. So to the book itself. I loved it. I liked the the original DVD so I was looking forward to the book and it didn't disappoint me. There is a lot of new material which expands on the story and helps fill in some background. The links to the 1971 doctor who story "the daemons" are fully utilized with the village of Devil's End making an appearance along with the excellent character of olive Hawthorne. I really enjoyed the book and it's nice to finally have the second story to feature the original Kate lethbridge-Stewart as played by Beverley cressman as a novel. (The first being 1994's downtime by Marc Platt.) The publisher telos is a small company so it isn't cheap but the quality of the book is excellent and the writing is very good. There are a few niggles. "Sergeant Yates" is a basic error. And there are a couple of moments that don't quite add up. At one point it's stated that Kate and Cavendish went on a date then later that morphs to her visiting him in hospital once. But they are only minor things and they didn't bother me much. The previous book adapted from a reeltime drama "the daemons of devil's end" suffered from the same minor problems but I also enjoyed that. Overall it's a great little book. It's nice to see telos are doing more adaptations (Sil and the Devil Seeds of Arodor in November 2019 and Anomaly in November 2020) I know there are no plans to adapt the early dramas from reeltime, wartime, mindgame and mindgame: trilogy which is a shame but I'm just grateful to have this and the forthcoming releases. A very enjoyable "doctor who" novelisation and after the recent Eric saward book resurrection of the daleks, this was a breath of fresh air.
