Curious Creatures Working With Tools has a cover that makes you want to pick it up and dive right in. My daughter who's only five identifies more as an illustrator than a writer when choosing books. This can mean that she has a fiction heavy diet of books and it can be tricky to pique her interest with a non-fiction title. Anja Sušanj completely drew her in with her gentle style of illustration giving the book a very cosy, personal feel. Zoë Armstrong cleverly grips your attention at the start of the book with the incredible otters and their use of tools found in their environment. Flying Eye Books have another fiction title - The Perfect Rock which would make an ideal pairing with this book showing the skills and connection otters have to rocks to help them. The following spread gives a clear explanation to define the term 'tool' which I felt was very important and great to have near the start of the book. There's lots of interestingly facts throughout the book and great direction on how to discover a little more. For instance, there is a small block on the primatologist Jane Goodall. You could then look to explore Jane more through other texts such as the Jane Goodall title in the Little People Big Dreams series. My daughter did ask what a primatologist was and there are other words defined in the text and this term might have been useful to have been one of them. We loved that the location of where these animals lived was prominent in the books and my little one particularly enjoyed using a globe and atlas to look up where in the world the author was referring to and how far it was from us. Throughout Zoë cleverly shows us how we are not that dissimilar to animals. There's a section on dolphins and how some use a sponge to protect their noses from getting hurt when foraging for food. Zoë equates this to us wearing pads to protect ourselves and helmets. This section was one of my littles favourites - you absolutely want to discover about Sponging Eve too! There was very much a thread of diversity woven into the book with comparisons and differences highlighted. Finding out that the same animals do different things in different places was an element we enjoyed. Two other sections that we found enthralling were the large-billed crows in Tokyo who have an ingenious way to use us humans to help them get food and the fascinating firehawks.
