Reviews: Creed (1)
“Seriously turbo charged and spewing black fumes”
(Paperback)
One of James Herbert's best novels for my money. This book - his fifteenth - was written while he was at the height of his powers. It's sassy and slick, chilling and funny. The protagonist's name might give you an indication of what fun to expect with word-play - Joe Creed = Joke Read - but don't be lulled into thinking this is anything other than a proper James Herbert horror novel. Although somewhat dated on the tech front - Creed's camera equipment is old state, with film requiring developing, and there are no mobile phones - in many ways this novel was a statement and commentary of the horror genre back at the end of the 1980s. Funny, yes, but serious stuff underneath it all. But it's James Herbert, never forget that, and thrills and spills abound, and there's a bit of kinky fun too. Seriously recommended.
