Just occasionally one comes across an author whose writing is extraordinary in its inventiveness and originality of imagination. Flann O'Brien (The Third Policeman) was one of these, Franz Kafka, of course, another. Nowadays we have Jeff Vandemeer and Brian Catling, and even Irene Sola with her fabulous "When I Sing, Mountains Dance". Bruno Schulz is one of these who take us to places few others do; the fantastical recesses of our subconscious minds, with often absurd but delightful results. This collection brings together all of Schulz's previously published works, plus a few others (which are comfortably good enough to be included). The immense task of re-translating all these works may or may not have been entirely worthwhile - I wonder if the translator has perhaps been a bit too literal, rather than favouring the feel of the text - but who knows what Schulz himself would have preferred. Either way, it's a wonderful treat to have all these pieces brought together in a single volume. A volume which features one of the author's own, superb artworks on the cover. If you enjoy Kafka, you will most likely love Schulz too.
