This is another classic Richard Yates book. He brings the characters, and their flaws, to life. Although fiction, it rings as a realistic description of suburban America in the first half of the twentieth century - the dreams, growing middle class, and the steady erosion of people's dreams as real life turns out to be less good than they had hoped it would.
