I love her writing, I love all of her books, and I love this book! This book is like a warm soup for the heart, absolutely a wonderful time being lost in its pages. It is gorgeously written. I really think that the way she weaves the different genres together, and her style of writing make it so that there’s nothing else similar to her book, especially this one. The book is structured into four seasons, during which Eden and we go to some of her favourite spots, and we read scrumptious thoughts about food, cooking, friendships, and the places she’s been. It’s a must read for all who like reading trail, and food writing books, but not just fore those - anyone open to a memoir, pick up this book! For me, more than anything, it is a delicious blend of genres, with beautiful writing, about belonging and memories. The prose and observation added together is a recipe like no other, I highly recommend this book.

I have over 400 cook books and nothing comes close to Caroline writing. I thoroughly enjoyed Samarkand and Red Sand and now I get to enjoy more fully her life, travel and cooking discoveries in more detail. A must for all cook book lovers and travel writers. If this doesn’t win an award, I will eat my hat. Thank you to the publisher for my proof copy, but I will be buying my own and hunting down Caroline Eden to sign it for me.

This was a pure escapement read. I loved the food descriptions and you travelled while sitting on your sofa to Central Asia, the Baltics etc. Each chapter starts with a lovely cooking lesson and you get the the recipes.. Darwin the dog is a lovely part of the story . I can’t recommend it enough .

A perfect blend of travel, food, home, and dogs - this book truly feels like a companion, and for me will become one of the favourite books to keep on hand in the kitchen, as Eden likes to do so she has something to read through all the cooking bits that require done attention but little action. I'm not much of a traveller, but I absolutely understand the way cooking transports us through memory to other places, times, and people. Each chapter explores a different place through the associations of a chosen recipe, which in turn rounds off the chapter so we can cook along if we wish too. There's a rich bibliography of further reading and so much inspiration for places to visit, food to cook, and things to read. This is the best of memoir, travel, and food writing and a delicious thing to dip in and out of on it's own account.

Caroline Eden is a well travelled writer. From her Edinburgh home - the cold kitchen - she cooks and weaves a story around the ingredients.
