Reviews: Catch Your Breath (9)
“Poignant and Hilarious”
(Hardback)
A brilliantly written book that manages to play superbly on the line between deeply poignant and hilarious. As a doctor I found large amounts of this hugely relatable but also a great insight into parts of the COVID world I had never seen before. There will be very few with the skillset to paint such an important picture whilst maintaining levity and readability, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.
“Everyone should read!”

Thank you to the publishers for this early review copy. What a read!!
This begins to touch the surface on training, NHS pre and during Covid 19. We saw it on the news, we read about it but not many of us worked the NHS front line during it - I certainly didn't. We all owe them so much. So many people went above and beyond risking their own lives every day. This is just a glimpse into it, I suggest you read it and then consider dealing with it in person, could you? Would you? How would you cope? How would you feel if after working and surviving the first wave the second then hit?
This is a light hearted read in part as he touches upon his training but also a very heart felt read especially when it reaches his life on the front line during the Covid 19 first wave. How can you possibly imagine what these people dealt with each and every day for months in both waves...
I've previously read and loved 'This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay' which gave us an insight into the NHS, this although partly similar with the humour then takes it to the next level by including the Covid 19 pandemic to date. I am very happy to recommend this book on to all and urge you to take the time to read it.
“Brilliant, emotional and funny”
(Hardback)
This was absolutely brilliant. Full of humour, raw honesty and emotional chapters, this is a book that will stay with me and will recommend to everyone.
It has plenty of funny stories as we go through Ed's training to be an anaesthetist which was really enjoyable and made me laugh out loud plenty of times!
Then covid hits and it becomes heartbreaking as he is moved from operating theatres to the ICU. It definitely made me appreciate the NHS and everyone in the health and care professions so much more and opened my eyes toward the struggles and hardships that the NHS really went through.
“Light hearted and funny”

Think of Adam kay, but in anaesthetics instead of obstetrics.
This book is a humorous overview of training to be an anesthetist. It covers Ed's journey from green medical student to junior doctor during covid. It was funny and interesting. I would have liked more indepth patient stories. I worked as a midwife for the nhs for 18 years and I hoped this would have more detailed descriptions of anaethetics. However, I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys medical memoirs. Many thanks to the publishers for sending me a copy to review.
“Brilliant and necessary”
(Hardback)
This is easily one of the most necessary non-fiction books for current times. Catch Your Breath is an intimate dive into life as an anaesthetist, following Ed Patrick's journey into the medical field and the sharp shift in lifestyle when faced with the Covid19 pandemic. It covers the true horrors of what the NHS went through in early 2020 and the many ways they fought to keep their heads above water. This book is at times funny and carefully handled with Patrick's easy charm, but also a harrowing account of the reality of working for the NHS.
Thank you to Hachette for sending me an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
