Reviews: Catch-22 (16)
“Should've read years ago”
(Paperback)
This book was recommended by my English teacher in College but I didn't bother to read it. I enjoy the Monty Python films and it was recommended by a colleague who also enjoys and this is definitely a book equivalent which has me laughing out loud.
“a real feather in your cap!”
(Paperback)
Catagorically, this book is insane. it's mad. It's bonkers. It's wacko. It's sixes and sevens. It's sevens and eights. It's flown the coop in a B-19 bomber and got shot down over Avignon. It is absolutely, catagorically, utterly out-the-wazoo and I loved it.
“A unique and wonderful book.”
(Paperback)
These kinds of books are truely few and far between. Packed with wondeful characters who are brought to life through a style unmatched in modern writing. You may feel a little lost to begin with, but you'll stick with it anyway, for the madness, the laughs, the depth...and soon enough it all starts to add up. A book about war with glimpses of horror swimming in waves of absurdity. A long book, but one, if you're anything like me, you'll eagerly race through. Even if the subject matter doesn't appeal, if you love coming across gems of literature this is a book for you.
“Complex”
(Paperback)
I picked this book up at University as it was thoroughly recommended. The size of it meant that I did not come to read it until later when I had time to focus upon it. And this book requires focus as it has many themes weaved together.
Yossarian is the center of the book and the madness that ensues centres on him and his attempt to avoid fighting. For a book centred in a War, the war is not the foreground...it dominates every persons actions and their attempts to keep themselves alive. For one more day.
As for the 'catch 22', suffice it to say that there is not one but many catch 22's interlinked. And the ultimate triumph of the book is one persons fight against seemingly impossible odds.
“Catch-22”
(Paperback)
This book is so cleverly put together. Scenes which first appear comic reveal themselves 100 pages later to be horrifically tragic. This classic satire of the paradoxical logic of military beauraucracy is one of the best (and funniest) books I've ever read - upon finishing it I only wanted to start it again.
