Cosgrove’s books on soul have been superb - compelling, gossipy, passionate. ‘Cassius X’ takes a similar strategy: using a small, historical detail (Cassius Clay’s conversion to Islam) and uses it as a prism to view a panorama of subjects: civil rights, boxing, organised crime, Profumo and American history. It’s a relatively short book; but with incredible focus, discipline and style.
