“Intriguing Icelandic Noir”
(Paperback)
This is book one in the Dóra and Rado Series set in Iceland. Elliði is head of local police department, Dóra, works in CID, but only based in the office, not going out on calls. Fast paced with a lot going on, maybe a bit too much at times, this is a complex but exciting book.
Briefly, it is winter in Reykjavik, cold, snowy and miserable when 15 year old teenager Morgan goes missing from a school outing, Dóra and Rado are partnered up and assigned to handle the investigation. They are both treated as misfits by the force. Dóra unsuccessfully coping after having being shot in the head whilst Rado has serious family issues with his family who are involved in a drug running. With no sign of the girl they both get dragged into a dangerous situation, with somebody targeting Dóra, whilst Rado finds his family criminal history coming home to bite him.
There’s a lot going on in this book, gang warfare, corruption and Rado’s own brother on the warpath life is not easy for Dóra and Rado. I really enjoyed these two characters. Dóra is brilliant, even brain damaged she is highly intelligent and says exactly what she is thinking, regardless of the situation whereas Rado is a bit more circumspect but honest to the core. They shouldn’t get on but they do and together form a brilliant partnership. A gritty and exciting thriller, quite dark but with dry humour that breaks up the darker moments, and I look forward to reading book 2.
