“Edinburgh mystery”

Set in Edinburgh, this story follows DCI Liam Brodie as he searches for the bodies of murdered women while also dealing with a case in Fife of a skeleton being found. This is a rollercoaster ride of emotions and getting to know the team. Full of humour as the team go about their work. An enjoyable Scottish police procedural. Perfect for fans of JD Kirk and Andrew Raymond. With thanks to the author,Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book.

“Unputdownable first in series”

Three years ago, DCI Liam Brodie had a very unpleasant encounter with one of Edinburgh’s most notorious serial killers before he was put away into a secure facility for the criminally insane. Now Brodie is with Fife’s Major Investigations Team but must interact with the killer at intervals to have him show where he buried each of the victims. The men who work with Brodie are a lot of fun regular guys who get along pretty well most of the time and are very effective in their investigations. The story is fluid but intricate and more than a little twisty. Unputdownable.

I like this new read by John Carson, featuring DCI Liam Brodie. The characterisation is believable and the plotting just oozes tension and mystery. It's about secrets, revenge and guilt, for the first in a new series, it has hit the ground running. There is a touch of humour from a couple of characters investigating the disappearance of their DCI in Fife, which added to the realism but this is a well written piece of crime fiction which I can highly recommend to lovers of the genre. I look forward to seeing how the series develops.

DCI Liam Brodie has a reputation as a clever detective. A new role in Fife's M.I.T. means working with a new team of individuals and the in-house mystery of the team's missing DCI. It's a pacy and twisty dark mystery, relieved with dark humour and a close-knit team dynamic. Its setting is evocative, and its characters are believable and complex, making this an immersive read. I enjoyed the characterisation, the story's intensity and the writing style.
