A very charming and spooky comic of a trans man getting his life back on track by holding onto his new ramen chef job. But it all takes a dark turn after the big work party. I really liked how it went back and forth in the timeline with different colour schemes for past and present. It made what was happening in the present so much more of a gut punch when you see how cosy everything was. The art style is absolutely beautiful and packed with so much detail. I know when I read this again I will be able to pick out loads of details I inevitably missed first time round. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This slice of life comic book explores the life of Ash, a young trans man in his first job at a lively South London Ramen Shop. With his crew of colleagues, each of them unique and lovable (My favourite is Creamy), Ash faces to day to day monotony of the restuarant while under the watchful eye of his control-freak boss, Bug. The comic has a beautiful colour palette, with peachy pages representing the start of his employment, purple pages describing the night of the infamous and unfortunate staff party, and pinkey-purple tones in the aftermath, when the two timelines catch up to each other. I loved how the comic portrayed a trans man in his day-to-day job - it's beautiful and rare to see a trans character introduced to a story without a large part of their character arc being simply the fact that they are trans. We join Ash as he settles in to his job and nothing about his trans identity is constructed as a big drama, it's simply a part of who he is. The spooky twists at the end had me hooked - it's an instant favourite that I'm sure I will read again and again!

Bone Broth is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel following young, transmasculine Ash as he takes his first adult job working in a fast paced ramen restaurant alongside a cast of quirky characters. There are two main timelines intertwined here - one in primarily pink hues in which Ash finds his feet amongst his colleagues, and a darker, purple-toned thread where a sudden death, and the subsequent choices they make, send the characters down a much more sinister path. The illustrations are intricate, imaginative and beautiful, and I’d love to read a sequel to find out what happens next to Ash and his friends, and also to discover a little more about the history of the arches and the nature of the supernatural entities that reside there.
