“You learn something new, but at the same time you don't...”
(Paperback)
by Kate
Gladwell's books have this one interesting factor to them... You learn something new, but at the same time you don't... In this particular book we look at making decisions in the matter of seconds. We do get a lot of understanding about how it works and how people can get better at it, but in the meantime we don't acquire any skills we can use in the future to improve our own abilities. However even though you get no practical skills after reading this, if you want to know more - enough information is provided in order to help you to explore those paths. That is what I love about Gladwell's writing. He explains principles, but doesn't give us a lecture on how to do it, however provides tools. It's almost like attending a school/university, but without the exams in the end.
“Disappointingly old-fashioned ideas about autism that spoil an otherwise good book.”
(Paperback)
by Lizzie Bl
I was enjoying it until Gladwell got to a section in which he discusses autism. The author refers to people as ‘normal’ or autistic. As someone who works with children with autism, I found this is incredibly offensive. The author also suggests that ‘people with autism as obsessed with mechanical objects.’ Has this author done any real research into ASD? Later on, Gladwell talks about being ‘temporarily autistic.’ Wow! There are much better ways to describe what he is trying to say. All in all a disappointing book.
