Reviews: Blink (7)
“Blink”
(Paperback)
A fascinating book that looks at the role that instinct plays in everyday life. Gladwell's points are illuminated by a combination of real-life stories and accessible, credible science. His writing is fresh and economical and, unlike many books of this nature, he neither labours points for too long nor repeats himself too much. It isn't a self help book, but there are lessons for life here in business, in social and in family life. A really good read that will get you thinking about all sorts of stuff.
“Fascinating and engaging…if you’ve never heard of thin-slicing, this is a compelling read.”
(Paperback)
At its heart, this book is about human judgement and how we make it. What happens when we use our gut, how the brain and subconscious operates in those initial seconds as we process the vast array of barely noticeable data available to us and what happens when our instincts are disrupted. The author talks to psychologists, art experts, sportsmen, military generals, policemen and musicians, each of them bringing a unique perspective to the subject. Despite the somewhat academic nature in places, the topic is not at all dry in this author’s hands.
The observations and language around the section comparing the response of an autistic person is perhaps reflective of the fact that it was published more than 20 years ago and is not grounds for dismissing the book in its entirety as other reviewers have suggested. Read it for yourself and make your own judgement.
“Great for all”
(Paperback)
I loved this book. The simple writing style means you don't have to be a genius to understand it, but the subject matter is still fascinating. The little stories and examples he gives brings the book to life.
“It's really thought provoking and stays with you”

This book was fab! It really made me think about that gut instinct we all get in everyday situations and at times we ignore it, should we pay more attention to that gut instinct or not? I dont know if am any the wiser but this was a great read.
