“Simply outstanding”
(Paperback)
The news begins to report murders and suicides on a global scale. Something is driving people insane. But no one knows what the 'something' is - once it's been seen, it's too late. The world is panic-stricken as reports increase. It's spreading like a deadly virus. People board up their windows. No one dares to look outside. No one can step outside unless their eyes are covered.
Following the suicide of her sister, pregnant Malorie seeks refuge in a 'safe house' inhabited by other strangers. Together they form a close bond and learn to survive in the New World. But everything changes when Gary knocks on their door seeking a place to stay. Malorie thinks he's a potential threat. Is he what he appears to be or is there something darker lurking within?
OH MY GOODNESS, this book is outstanding! It totally blew me away! I loved every single word, paragraph, page and chapter. I was chilled to my core; genuinely scared to within an inch of my life. I couldn't read quickly enough - I HAD to know how it ended.
The horror within the story is merely hinted at and boy oh boy, how the reader's imagination goes into overdrive! What is the 'something' that awaits outside? Monsters, demons, creatures from another planet? Imagine not being able to step outside with your eyes open; forever trapped in a world without nature - the sky, the river, the fields. All are gone, yet still existing. You can touch but you cannot see.
Don't go into this novel expecting a gorefest - you wont get it. It's so much more. It's all the worst nightmares you've ever dreamed; the worst you can imagine dreaming. It's intelligent, it's suspenseful, cloying, claustrophobic, atmospheric. It's....well...it's just amazing!
How can you fight an enemy you cannot see?
Read it...if you dare!
“Don't look...”
(Paperback)
What a frighteningly original concept! Creatures that make you go mad if you look at them, so you don't, you spend your life with your eyes closed, learning how to see the world around you by listening. A truly horrifying tale, thoroughly enjoyable!
“Hooked from the start!”
(Hardback)
This psychological thriller will keep you gripped from the first page to the last (and if you are anything like me you'll read it in one sitting!) It follows Malorie as she and her two young children take a terrifying journey out into the world where seeing really is taking your life into your own hands. The story jumps back and forth between Malorie on their journey and the backstory of how she came to this point in time. Why are they leaving their house? Where are they going? These and many other questions will keep you guessing right until the last page.
My only criticism of this story is that it is not long enough and leaves you wanting more, but I definitely cannot wait to see what Josh Malerman comes up with next.
“Wow Scary and fantastic !”
(Paperback)
This is one of the most unsettling and gripping books I have read in years ! The fact that you do not know what to be frightened of makes the whole thing so much more scary . I will say do not read this book at night home alone !

“A great read - buy it!”
(Hardback)
There are reports of people dying, killing themselves after seeing something which drives them insane. Gradually the deaths happen closer to home - then it's here. The tv, radio, internet and phone gradually die and are silent. Don't look outside.
I felt a sense of foreboding from the start, the suspense building throughout and I was willing Malorie and her two children to survive.
A gripping first novel, about survival against something evil and unseen. Buy this book - and read it with the curtains closed.
