Reviews: Bird Box (43)
“Thrilling read!”
(Paperback)
Wow! What a read! Thrilling, scary, intriguing and a serious page-turner!! I have no words to describe the feelings that this book instills when reading. Malerman's way with words and the description used for the senses when you have one missing is amazing and really has you in the story from the beginning. An incredibly scary concept and a thrilling read!
“The best book I have read since Harry Potter”
(Hardback)
Bird Box truly is a must read!!! It has to be the best book I have read since Harry Potter by J.K Rowling. As soon as I read the first few pages i was hooked and couldn't put it down, the story is amazing and so well written you actually feel like your there. I really hope to see more from this writer and would love a second book to follow on the story. It really is a must read!! Truly amazing!!
“Fear breeds fear!”
(Hardback)
Not the genre of novel I would usually chose but delighted I got to review Josh Mallerman's début work ...it is brilliant!
Like several of the characters in the novel I did wonder for a while if the attacks / suicides were a result paranoia and not the 'creatures'; the victim's fear feeding even deeper fears and leading to their desperation and eventual suicide.
Love the fact that the 'creatures' are never described, after-all no-one sees them and lives but this allows the reader's own imagination to create their own nightmarish image.
The only thing that did leave me confused is that Tom fed the dogs raw meat to get their trust, yet the 'house-mates' have survived on canned foods for months and months ...where did the meat appear from?
The irony of finding safety in a school for the blind after years of having to wear a blindfold to prevent seeing a 'creature' was a great idea. It is doubly ironic that the residents of the school cannot see Malorie and her children.
A great book I shall encourage friends to read.
“Couldn't put his book down”
(Hardback)
If you are a fan of the walking dead this book is definitely for you with twists and turns and a fair bit of gore, its not one for those who scare easily.
The story is based on a creature which if you see it sends you mad enough to kill yourself by any means possible. The book follows the story of Malorie who is pregnant and trying to survive in a world where you can't look outside. The book really is gripping and caused me a very late night as I needed to see what was going to be Malories fate!
I would highly recommend this to other readers and hope that the author is working on a sequel!
“An excellent and original apocalyptic horror novel!”
(Paperback)
I made the mistake of watching the film first, but I still absolutely loved this book!
Bird Box follows Malorie and her two children as they try to survive in a world that has completely changed. Creatures roam the planet, but one look at them causes you to become incredibly violent.
This is one of the most unique concepts I’ve ever heard of and I absolutely love it. Malerman manages to transport the reader to a truly horrifying world, and really makes you question what you would do in the characters situation. I ended up really connecting to Tom and Jules, I loved their sacrifice and bravery for the greater good. I did struggle to connect with Malorie because of her brusque nature, but it was also necessary in order to protect herself and the children.
Although I was not scared by this novel (it seems it is quite a hard feat to be able to scare me) I was thoroughly engrossed in every page. The rising tension and short chapters kept me reading much longer than I should have been. What I did not expect, was the tears that came to my eyes in the last couple of chapters. I found myself feeling incredibly emotional and had to pop the book down so I could gather myself. I would recommend holding out on watching the movie adaptation until after you have read this as it did lessen one of the ‘twists’ for me. Overall, this is an incredibly engrossing and tense read that I will never forget!
I recommend this book to fans of an apocalyptic thriller/horror.
