Dave Mountjoy moved to the French Pyrenees with his wife in 2013, intending to set up a glamping business. A strange twist of fate meant that instead he bought a herd of cows, some suitable land , and ended up (years later) offering retreats for those who felt their lives could be improved by being with cows. The cows are not farmed, they just live their lives on the land around the home, being cared for by Dave and an often changing group of volunteers. Having established his original home in the French Pyrenees, a family tragedy set Dave back emotionally, but it was with the help of the herd and the daily chores that had to be done (along with his unique-sounding belief system) that helped him deal with what happened. The book is an emotional one, and inspirational if you know and understand the beauty and wonder of our bovine friends. There are many personal tales of some of the characters who make up the herd, but the most instructive one is how we as humans can live with and appreciate cows just by interacting with them. It doesn't shy away from some of the more challenging times the family experienced (especially towards the end of the book, just when you think everything is coming together!), but overall it is definitely a book about hope and kindness and being good to each other, whether human or otherwise.
