The saga continues... this time the reader does not feel so much that they are "In Transit" so to speak. The war takes a more logical path where battle tactics start to assume a greater importance than simply having two armies facing each other and slogging it out bullet for bullet shell for shell and corpse for corpse.. The old intrigues are still there, as in many wars in history the lions are the fighting soldiers. Their leaders have more interest in either political or social advancement or simply self gratification, than any real conviction that the war they are fighting is going to result in a better society all round. Then there are the soldiers of fortune - not in the usual sense of the word - but those who have either spent a fortune, lost a fortune, or consider themselves to have been fortunate, to have been in the right place a the right time to make the more gullible in society consider them to be the heros of the piece. The real leaders, the ones of real worth, shine not because of Bull S*** and Blanco but because they really do have a broader vision. Pity there were not more of them. This book was more readable as the novel saw more of the storylines reach some form of satisfactory conclusion - leastwise for the moment. Now looking forward to the last book in the set.

This was a series that was very well written and researched but just didn't grip me. It should work. It just doesn't for me. It's not a bad set of books but the lead character isn't particularly engaging and the books seem slower. Ok but not terribly memorable.
