Reviews: Bald (2)
“Funny, Thoughtful & Brilliant”
(Hardback)
Before I start this review, I need to be honest and let you know that in the words of Stuart Heritage - I am a hair person. I am very aware that I am not the target audience of this book but that has not stopped me enjoying every page. Knowing Stuart's previous work, I expected the book to be funny (it truly was) but what I didn't expect was for it to be so touching & thoughtful. By the end of this brilliant book I felt like I'd been alongside Stuart on his hair loss journey and I've learned a lot along the way. Whether like me, you're a hair person or like my wonderful Dad, a bald person - you'll be glad you read it.
“Honest and direct”
(Hardback)
One of the best non-fiction books I’ve read so far this year. I like to read a range of genres and this interested me, as there does seem to be a stigma attached to the whole concept of losing your hair, but various people react to it in different ways. Why do some men do whatever it takes to hold onto the few sparse hairs they have, while some choose to shave it off at the first sight of a thin patch? The psychology behind this could probably fill many books, but Stuart shares his personal experience of no longer having the full head of hair he was used to.
Bald is an honest and direct account of the measures he took over the years and how his choices affected him. Until I read this, I was oblivious to the extent that hair, or the lack of it, can really affect how people are viewed in society and how they see themselves.
I particularly liked his explanation of the trouble with wearing hats and the challenge that hairdressers face - ‘It wasn’t like cutting hair, it was like chasing a ghost’ is one of many memorable descriptions.
Overall, this is not just a book for bald people. As a female with a head of thick curly hair, I definitely did not think I was the target audience, but I was pleased to receive a proof from the publisher and read it in one sitting.
