“Fantastically spooky and gripping Tuva Moodyson Thriller number 4!”
(Hardback)
I am so in Love with Will Deans character Tuva Moodyson for so many reasons, she’s deaf, she’s fearless, she’s gutsy, she’s got a fit girlfriend and she’s funny, so I was really excited to start reading Bad Apples, Tuva Book 4
Tuva has returned to Gavrik ( Toy Town as she calls it! ) and is back in her old job, as a crime reporter, at the local paper. In the smaller Town of Visberg, high on the hill, the old Reporter has retired and Tuva has taken over the patch. To get used to the place and to start to get to know the locals she starts spending time up there, but on her first visit she encounters a headless corpse!
I’ve devoured everything Will has written and I have to say that this is the best Tuva book so far, the setting is SO atmospheric, so claustrophobic and so easy to picture in your minds eye.
The cast of Visberg locals that Tuva meets are so ethnically mixed and a lot are weird to be fair, BUT that only adds to the plot and frankly what a bloody explosive plot it is!
The build up had me feeling like I was on edge and had me thinking of that classic movie The Wicker Man, the descriptive prose of Pan Night is just absolutely stunning, it sets Tuva in the spooky Visberg during October, to a treat! Swedish Folklore and Will Deans devious mind work SO well together, and will have you gripped!
I am not going to give anything away, as normal BUT it’s a brilliant book…another 3 day read for me! And the ending!!!!!! Will please dont leave me hanging for too long I must read Tuvas book 5 soon!!
Any book that makes you have visceral feelings means it’s a brilliantly written one, this will have you anxious, gripped, over-thinking and downright scared shitless!
5 Star Read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Scandi Noir set in Visberg, Sweden - Tuva is back!”
(Hardback)
Will Dean has one dark and twisted mind. Haha Jeepers, that forest, the decapitation and the stench of rotting apples…..There’s even a scene at the dentist..I know right? Oh and the balloons…I’ve never liked the regular ones but these……
The novel starts with a grim scene. Tuva is back on top form and stumbles on a case which she then becomes even more involved with. Trouble is – Visberg is one strange place. On hill, with people who seem very different to those of Gavrik or the rest of Sweden.
Set at Halloween or Pan Night as it’s called here, there are some scary traditions to be experienced. I was nervous for Tuva as the build up to the night becomes ever stranger. The locals who work in the gun shop, the watch shop and the place they call The Hive…jeepers would not want to meet any of these on a dark night. Sadly, Tuva has to…..I had a keen sense of foreboding as I read.
What a reading experience! Tuva has gone to the dark side in a way. Those trolls are back. The town goes wild…it’s as if something is taking it over. Just don’t look in the pans….
My stomach did recover at some point as the mention of a crayfish pizza caught my attention. However, I will stay clear of apples for now.
Moral of this story – Never approach Will Dean close to Halloween. Haha it rhymes. Almost sounds like a slogan. It’s definitely good advice after reading Bad Apples.

Tuva Moodyson #4
I am a Will Dean fan so couldn’t pass up the opportunity to read this book even though I haven’t read the rest of the series. It’s in the back of my head that I’ve read about Tuva before.
It’s got a very Scandi Noir feel, but non of the clunk of a translation, bags of atmosphere. The names aren’t complex to get your head around. It’s an easy read which I don’t find with Scandi books.
The protagonist is Tuva Moodyson a deaf newspaper journalist.
The Title is from the rotting apples left but maybe also the evil residing in the town.
There’s been a murder in the woods at Visberg, with Tuva arriving at the scene shortly after it had happened. The timing is around Pan night. A ritualistic festival specific to the town where outsiders are not invited, is there a connection?
The opening is creepy as…. I was instantly hooked. The pace is good, with constant interest. It builds tension well. I was riveted throughout.
Tuva is feisty, Witty, likeable, flawed, very efficient at her job. Her character is well written and believable, and there is good character development.
Visberg is a creepy town, with some strange occupants, and even stranger happenings! It’s quite dark
There are several of the towns folk Tuva identifies as potential suspects either directly or by observations of characteristics.
I loved the inclusion of some of the Swedish customs like blankets on the chairs of outdoor cafes. Indoor and outdoor shoes.
What I really NEED to know is are those pizza toppings a real thing??
This is an excellent book, I highly recommend it, and must catch up with the rest of the series. I am now a Tuva Fan

NO SPOILERS
I’d not read any of the Tuva Moodyson series before (this is Book 4) but I had read Will Dean’s sublime The Last Thing to Burn which instantly made me want to read his other work.
I don’t think it mattered too much that I hadn’t read the previous books (though I want to rush and and buy them now) as I felt it worked well on its own, explaining all the reader needs to know and setting a very clear scene for what comes to follow.
I’m the type who watches scary stuff through her fingers, and definitely not before bed time, This was certainly a dark, spooky and intense read. Gasps galore. And some great dark humour. The last 10% I was literally holding my breath. And that ending! I will certainly be eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
Cannot recommend enough to readers of original dark mystery/thrillers. Tuva might be my new favourite character.
