Reviews: Artemis (24)
“Crime caper on the moon”
(Hardback)
by Claudia Sunderhauf
Artemis – the city on the moon. Two thousand people live in several connected domes in a close-knit community. Part of the colony is geared towards rich tourists but mostly it’s inhabited by ordinary people, workers, tradesmen, service folk. Jazz Bashara is one of them, scratching a living as a porter with a bit of smuggling on the side. One of her wealthy contacts offers her a huge amount of money for a bit of sabotage. Needless to say, things don’t turn out quite as planned; a metaphorical can of worms is opened and threatens to destroy everything Jazz holds dear. I really enjoyed this fast-paced, joyful sci-fi caper. The characters are likable, Jazz is a feisty, sassy heroine with plenty of smartarse comebacks. Life on the moon is vividly portrayed and the workings of the city believable with plenty of entertaining science thrown in without being didactic. If you liked the Martian, you’ll love this.
“Great fun”

I really enjoyed Andy weir's second novel. I liked that it is completely different to the excellent Martian novel being a crime heist on the moon compared to the Mars survivor story of the first novel. The writing is excellent and the story very good. I though it was clever that the lead character is a crook and would highly recommend this book. Like a lot of modern books, TV shows and films this book has been subject to many negative comments. In this case based in large part on the book not being a sequel to the Martian, not really sure a sequel to the Martian would work! Please ignore the negativity and just enjoy the book on it's own merits. It's a fun action filled heist book that stands on its own.
“Loved it!”

Fast, entertaining and totally engaging, I raced through Artemis, it’s an easy book to get lost in. I loved the characters and world building and as usual with Andy Weir, whilst the science was there, it didn’t take over or slow the flow down. An excellent read!
“More than 5 Stars!”

The setting for Andy Weir’s new book is the moon colony Artemis. Again you know that the science has been well researched, the way the dust alone could kill you, how to power the colony, and even the economics. Jazz Bashara is a young lady who is just trying to improve her life, make some money, yet her alternative career as a smuggler brings her into contact with the rich and powerful. It is these contacts that draw her into a criminal, political plot to take over the power plant that keeps Artemis alive. I loved The Martian, it was a revelation. I now also love Artemis. A book which perfectly combines a smart-talking, quick-witted hero with a deadly backdrop, all of which is reinforced with real science.
“A great ride of a story”

I saw the film Martian, thought let’s try the author. Thoroughly loved the roguishness of Jazz and all the twists. Moved on to the Hail Mary Project
