Reviews: Arborescence (22)
“Stunning”
(Hardback)
by Muddy Paws
Very funny and thought provoking. From the breakdown of our natural eco-systems, to the introduction of AI co-workers, it covers a lot of ground and I couldn't put it down. Other reviewers have written in depth about the book so I won't waste your time repeating similar thoughts - if you get a chance, read it. 10/10 from me.
“A powerful novel for this moment”
(Hardback)
by Todd Ballantine at Windsor
For "Arborescence", Davis pulls together diverse branches to create a tremendously harmonious work. On the surface "Arborescence" has its roots in Anthroprocene eco criticism and dystopia, which dovetails perfectly with Davis' dry wit and the masterful body horror of the slow and grueling transformation into trees. But set against this wider pastiche is "Arborescence's" real strength. At its heart this is a novel about being stuck, of being rooted in a world that relentless pushes on. The relational dynamic between Bren and Caelyn which sprawls over years is equally crushing, tender, and relatable. But, perhaps, the most important of "Arborescence's" strands is one of hope, which makes it perfect for the time we find ourselves in.
“A piece of art unlike any other”
(Hardback)
by Taylor Stevens
It is exceedingly difficult to discuss this novel without delving into spoliers, and as such I implore you to go into this book blind to the story, just as I did. Rhett Davis has written a beautiful piece, touching yet funny, expansive yet domestic. In a world where everything and everyone is moving at the speed of light, it would serve us all well to take a brief moment to pause and read this book, and in the process gain a unique perspective of life, nature and human relationships. If you read just one book this year, make it this!
“One of the best reads of my year”
(Hardback)
by Abby Izzard
If you're like me and you're the type of reader who often finds themselves with a book in your hands thinking, "ah yeah, this one's going to mess me up real good", or maybe you've just read one too many romantasies and need something to rock your world instead, you should pick up 'Arborescence'. It explores the concept of a society who have moved forward so far into technology, they are ready to take root, become trees, and resign themselves back to nature, meanwhile following starkly regular people moving through their lives as best they can in the face of the world changing. It's gloomy, but meditative; therapeutic for our modern troubles. This book is a time capsule, confronting what it feels like to live through the turn of an era into unfathomable technological advancement, as we are now with AI -- and how nature will inevitably pull us back to earth.

“Reflective”
(Hardback)
by melissy teapot
A reflective book, told in vignettes, following a couple as they change and grow in the wake of a discovery that people are turning into trees - or are they?! Lots to unpack with this one, humanity vs AI, climate change, and hope. Not an action-packed novel, but reflective - which I ate right up!
