Simon Baker has a way of presenting history in a very readable way without confusion or fuss. He mentions most of the major aspects of life in the Roman Empire, from politics to the militry, to life in the provinces. Although, it doesn't give that much detail on any one thing, the book is a great overview of the Roman world.
