This is an impressive and thought-provoking debut novel. In the past, neurasthenia was a condition thought to affect Americans in particular, which is why the term 'Americanitis' was coined, and as we get to know the tortured and flawed narrator it's clear to see why the author chose this title. The novel assumes a degree of intelligence in the reader, while at the same time blending fact and fiction in a gripping, shocking and often puzzling way. I don't want to say any more about the story and give too much away. Just read it! Beard writes very well - he's definitely one to watch - and I look forward to seeing what he does next.

Super engaging and unique autobiography/novel (it's partly about determining the difference) which was recommended to me by a colleague who said she'd stayed up all night reading it because she couldn't put it down. Also found myself going back to it even after I told myself I'd take a break. For anyone interested in literary fiction but also wants a page-turner. Some beautiful sentences and unexpected humour as well.
