In this ninth novel, DI Helen Grace is faced with a difficult case. Five teenagers were abducted and held at gunpoint fifteen years ago. Now adults, they have moved on with their lives, trying to put their horrendous ordeal behind them. The man responsible was believed to have been killed in a fire where he had held them captive. However, as the adults involved start dying one by one, police are soon questioning whether he did indeed die in the fire. The plot is cunningly constructed, with excerpts from one character's recently-published account of the harrowing crime added to provide detailed background for the current raft of murders that involve the earlier crime's victims. The frequent changes of viewpoint kept the story effortlessly flowing at a comfortable pace. With buckets of suspense, the gritty story concludes with some unnerving, stomach-churning action and a twist. Now that I've had a glimpse into Helen Grace's life, I want to revisit!

However, even a slightly inferior book from this author is better than some of the other offerings out there. I am extremely pleased to announce that this one has returned to previous high levels. A fast-moving book from page one, through to the last. Written in short, quick to read chapters, that mean you are constantly thinking just one more chapter. As ever DI Grace is thoughtful and inciteful, with lots of action. Great well-developed characters, lots of twists and turns, with a very exciting climatic ending. Overall a great addition to this wonderful series, highly recommended.

What an amazing book I have read other books in the Helen Grace series but this was for me by far the best yet.It starts with a phone call and then follows a fast paced ,compelling story full of twists and turns such a good crime thriller and the ending well I didn't see that coming !! I love the hook in this thriller - the ‘dreaded’ phone call telling the victim “You have one hour to live” and then the obvious confusion that follows. DI Helen Grace leads the investigation to find the serial killer whilst battling some personal issues, an officer determined to make a name for himself and senior figures in the force making things yet more difficult. Nonetheless, the investigation team has to piece together the events and the evidence to discover and catch the serial killer. There are quite a few characters in this story, all solid and believable; the plot was cleverly constructed and worked out very neatly in the end. Fantastically enjoyable book!
