Reviews: Achoo! (1)
“Great fun”
(Paperback)
Floss (daughter aged 5) just came up to me after I'd picked up the book Achoo! and said - 'oh Mom you really need to read that one it's so funny, you'll love it!'. It really makes me chuckle when she's already snaffled a book away to read it and then gives me a book recommendation. Brilliant.
Well how could I resist an invitation like that?! She's absolutely right it's a fabulous book that will have you chuckling away at the mad antics of Sid and his uncontrollable sneezing. You won't believe the things that come out of his nose. It's a perfect read aloud for both a story at home but would be enormous fun as a class read too.
When I was teaching we'd always get a time of year when coughs and sneezes were prevalent and you'd need to help children to understand about germs, covering their mouths and noses and washing hands. This is even more relevant as we are living in the time of covid. Achoo! would be an ideal, fun way to introduce this topic before looking more deeply at germs. I particularly like the Usborne title What Are Germs? to look at the facts.
Simon Philip has a great rhyming style that bobs you nicely through the text. His vocabulary choices are excited and bold and will thrill young readers as they are developing their lexis. We particularly enjoyed basked, plunge, bewilderment and hullaballoo. Nathan Reed's illustrations pair perfectly with Simon's words. They're dynamic and oozing with humour. The panda spread and the one with an octopus on Sid's head were firm favourites from us both.
Bloomsbury titles are often filled with the wonders of imagination. We'd highly recommend another recent addition from them that's filled with imagination - Penelope Snoop: Ace Detective.
If your looking for some rip-roaring adventure reading this is the picture book for you.
