This accessible, lucid and scholarly book serves a threefold purpose, acting as: a rebuttal of the terrorist fringe in Islam, which is traced back to its roots in an anti-usul movement; a clarification of other contemporary misunderstandings about Islam, like those concerning Jihad and the Shariah; and a positive affirmation of what Islam actually is about, which both non-Muslims and Muslims can benefit from. In relation to this last purpose (which will perhaps be what guarantees this book lasting relevance and importance), general religious topics with philosophical undertones are covered from an Islamic perspective (e.g. What is Religion? Who Is Your Lord? Why Did God Create People? What Are Heaven and Hell? What Is The Heart? What Is Worldly Life?) and specific chapters are devoted to explaining the key foundations of Islam (e.g. What Is Islam? What is the Qur'an? Who Is The Prophet Muhammad?). The chapter on the Qur'an was the best introduction to Islam's sacred book that I have read, explaining its linguistic background and how to interpret it, the obstacles people have when first approaching it, the historical preservation of the text, its importance in the daily life of Muslims and influence upon Muslim civilisation and, ultimately, how it is a mirror to show us - if we are openhearted enough to look carefully - how we really are and what we can potentially become. It was a chapter written by an insider who shares his awe and love for the sacred text, and this is a state that permeates the entire book. Famous for his work on Love in the Holy Qur'an, Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad has written a work which not only serves its purpose as A Thinking Person's Guide to Islam, but also conveys his love for his faith and a desire to share it with others.
