This is definitely the best Maigret novel I've read so far. It begins with a prisoner finding his cell door unlocked, the guard absent and a rope dangling over the prison wall. His escape has been facilitated by Maigret, convinced of the condemned man's innocence. Nevertheless, the police believe the prisoner knows who really stabbed a wealthy widow and her maid to death, and will lead them to the killer. As Maigret and his team chase around Paris, you meet an array of people with different motives...the widow's niece, her playboy husband, and even a Czech student who taunts the police for their impotence in the case. But then again, he hadn't banked on Maigret...
