Reviews: A Loeb Classical Library Reader (1)
“Excellent”
(Paperback)
You can read this book at various levels, you can just enjoy a good read about people. Or maybe you read it at the level of the beginnings of written History, Literature, Theatre with verse and acting. If you have no Classical Language you can ignore the left hand text and just read the English. Here are real people who live in a mentally totally different world to the modern world. Auspices, omens and gods and sacrifices all so strange and far away to us. One tends to think the Classical world was the same as us, just dressed differently, but no they were a world away, with a very different mental landscape. Here is that landscape from people who created it or were witness to the great events of classical history. If you want to introduce young people to the classical World here is just the thing, other volumes are even more interesting, Suetonius on the Caesars, power may not corrupt absolutely, but it does not help if you are totally insane as were Caligula and Nero, and some of the other Emperors are very doubtful. But read it in the original text and find out for yourself. One of the great hidden secrets of the well read world, discover the Loeb Classics for yourself. Is this where Robert Graves did his research for “I Claudius”? Now there is a thought to muse upon.
