This is the third book Horowitz has written, and as in the previous two books Horowitz takes on the role of a bumbling amateur detective,, Hastings to ex detective Hawthorne’s Poirot. Horowitz as in the previous books has been persuaded to write a series of books about Hawthorne. The story is set on the Isle of Alderney, a sleepy place where not much happens, or so the inhabitants want visitors to believe. The island has organised a literary festival and Horowitz has been invited but only on the condition that Hawthorne goes as well.. Hawthorne is a former detective turned private detective and sometime advisor to the Police. Very soon it becomes abundantly clear all is not as it seems on the island. A murder is committed, the wealthy patron of the festival is found dead and the police from Guernsey are called to the island to Investigate, they in turn enlist the help of Hawthorne who has lost none of his skills in deducing crimes. Hawthorne soon gets to work interviewing the writers attending the festival as well as some of the local inhabitants, and as usual Horowitz tags along trying to solve the crime, looking at clues, but without much success. The premise of these books by Horowitz is extremely clever, he does not mind in the least taking on a supporting role to that of Hawthorne. The book is full of red herrings and misdirections. Horowitz gives little witticisms about publishers, agents and others in the literary world none are meant to cause offence, they add to the enjoyment of the book. The book is a pleasure to read. Horowitz has drawn characters you can hear speak from the narrative and the development of the story is superb. I thoroughly enjoyed this book which I would describe as a cosy crime, nothing gruesome about this book.

On a small island a literary festival was taken place. The famous authors were invited; among them Anthony Horowitz, the author of the Hawthorne series. Two murders were committed in a very short space of time where Horowitz and Hawthorne called to solve the mystery. What’s a treat for any book lover. The book is full of action, great characters and every page brings unexpected turn. Both murders weren’t solved till literally last chapter and we were left with a big twist at the end. Loved the book!

A very enjoyable read. Anthony Horowitz as himself with Daniel Hawthorne, ex detective and PI, about whom he is supposed to be writing a biography. They are off to a small literary festival on Alderney. I love the way Anthony writes about himself tongue in cheek, trying to out think the detective with whom he has a difficult relationship. And yet he is unable to see how he works out the answers; and there are plenty of answers to find as Hawthorne is asked to be a Consultant to the ineffective local police after the first murder. The book is peopled with wonderful characters, the second rate literary guests, the insular Islanders and the Island itself. It is all done with humour and a deft touch. It is also peppered with anecdotes within the main story and the writing is excellent as always. Hawthorne is as enigmatic as ever. Loved it! Good title too…. I admit to being biased as I'm totally hooked on this series. Really enjoyed the previous two books and in this one we begin to get a tiny bit more insight into the enigmatic PI Hawthorne. I really enjoy the way the relationship between Tony as Hawthorne calls him and his unlikely partner in investigation. Had a throughly nice day curled up with my jaffa cakes ( I blame the author for my new found fondness of them) and this book. Started inthe morning and finished it in the evening. Definitely a page turner. Hope the next one already being written.

Anthony Horowitz returns in the latest installment of his winning series featuring private investigator Danial Hawthorne and crime writer Anthony Horowitz ( the actual writer himself) and it is definitely not to be missed. With the release of their first book approaching, Hawthorne and Horowitz decide to raise some publicity by attending a literary festival on the tiny island of Alderney. However there fellow writers are a mixed bunch and include a celebrity chef and his mousy assistant, a french poet, a children's author, a blind psychic and a local historian each fighting his or her own battles. Meanwhile things only seem to get worse the moment they arrive on the island. The locals are up in arms about plans to build a power line across the island, desecrating war graves and destroying the local wildlife in the process. The man responsible is Charles Le Mesurier, who is also responsible for the festival and appears to have everyone of influence in his pocket. Add into the mix an old enemy of Hawthorne's and it isn't long before the situation erupts in a grisly and blood soaked murder. Anthony Horowitz has crafted a wonderful and entertaining mystery which had me hooked right to the very end. Knowledge of Horowitz's previous two novels (The Word is Murder and The Sentence is Death) is not essential to enjoy this story but I for one enjoyed this book so much I instantly went out after I had finished and bought these two books. A Line To Kill is a enjoyable and highly absorbing read with thrilling characters each with there own dark secrets, whilst its two leads make for a winning duo each facing there own troubles and doubts in each others motives. A Great thriller which I highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of Midsummer Murders, Foyle's War and Agatha Christie's Poirot and I must say a big thank you to the publishers for sending me a advanced copy.
