Reviews: A Cat Called Dog (2)
“Just lovely - a wonderful, funny book for children and adults especially cat lovers”
(Hardback)
Just wonderful - a lovely gift for Christmas for both children and adults. Strong characters, funny dialogue, an action-packed story with sad parts and scary parts and happy parts too.
Lots of in-jokes about teaching and learning too, I see, as an old tom cat teaches a little kitten who thinks he's a dog how to behave like a proper cat.
I have bought this for 3 friends who have kids aged 6 to 14. I'm sure they'll all love it. It's the best book story ever written about cats in my opinion.
Just delightful. Have read it three times already. A classic book for children and adults, especially but not exclusively cat lovers.
“The best and funniest cat book - ever!”
(Paperback)
I loved this book. It is a novel featuring cats - where an old tom has to teach a young tom (who thinks he's a dog) how to be a cat! Some wonderful characterisation - of the old tom George and Eric, the stray, in particular - made me laugh out line - the catchphrases and crisp dialogue here are classic! The story provides a context for the cats to reveal their characters, reach highs and lows, and have lots of funny encounters. Of course, as the introduction says, the cats could also be people, if the reader wants, just like in Animal Farm. I am recommending this novel as one of the best of the year and am buying several to give to cat-loving friends as presents - no cat lover could possibly dislike this original, funny and moving novel, although even those who dislike cats should enjoy it. The writing is sharp, the structure fast-paced, the action comes thick and fast - and I couldn't wait to hear what would happen next. I can't wait for the sequel! Bring out the biscuits!
