Reviews: A Basilisk Glance (2)
“Fascinatingly morbid - loved it!”
(Paperback)
by Sarah
I’ve only recently opened my reading fully up to non-fiction after dedicating some time searching out subjects that I’d be the most interested in. A Basilisk Glance by Robert Templer is one of those, I find the history of poison fascinating and this book didn’t disappoint and is great for those who usually find non-fiction a bit dry. Templer has created a balance of informative, funny, and anecdotal in his writing which keeps you engaged throughout. I even marked some paragraphs covering some of the weirdest “cures” (dried testicle powder anyone?) to whip out at random. The book is well researched with plenty of references to find further information on particular chapters. Something I found really fascinating was Templer’s deep dive myth-busting on chemical/bio weapons and how they actually cause more fear than death. They are extremely difficult, expensive, and dangerous to produce, as well as disseminate in quantities that would affect more than a handful of people. Essentially it usually needs to be state-funded and you’d need super experienced scientists who weren’t bothered about probably dying or getting very sick in the process. Some of my other favourite chapters included, ‘Plants Die, Shrubs Wither, Dogs Run Mad’ and ‘Emeralds And Hairballs’. Thanks to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
“A fascinating study”
(Paperback)
by Olivia at Telford
An in depth study of how poison and the fear of poison have shaped history, society and culture. Skipping between narrative and analysis, this book manages to be entertaining, terrifying and thought provoking all at the same time. The most successful aspects are the in-depth dives into specific events, however, the analytic sections are also hugely interesting. The book is well researched (with lots of references to follow up with) and clearly and engagingly written.
