Whose News?: The Media and Women's Issues

This book analyzes press coverage of five women's issues and critiques the portrayal of women on television in India between 1979 and 1988 - the period when the contemporary Indian women's movement began and developed. The issues discussed are: dowry-related deaths; rape; Muslim divorcees' rights to maintenance; the misuse of amniocentesis and other sex determination tests; and the re-emergence of the banned practice of sati.
