Synopsis

London: Henry Frowde Hodder and Stoughton, [1914]. First English edition, large paper copy, second issue. Royal 8vo. Publisher’s tan cloth with bevelled edges and footprint design in brown. Later issue with Milford at spine. Rubbing to bottom edge, top stain faded with spine hinge at front board starting. Light foxing to prelims and prize plate of London County Council to verso of front endpaper, else internally clean and largely sound with colour frontispiece of Professor Challenger and 11 additional mounted plates. Very Good. Conan Doyle’s sci-fi adventure story of a journey to South America, which uncovers a lost land populated by dinosaurs and prehistoric monsters. 1,000 copies of the first large paper issue were printed, while only 190 were bound. The remainder of the sheets were used for this second issue of 810 copies with ‘New Edition’ printed at the title page. Scarce. (Green & Gilson A37d)
