Synopsis
Father John is a much-loved priest who understands the dramas and tragedies that play out beneath the ordinary surface of a parish. His own life is plunged into foreboding and terror when a half-familiar stranger enters the confessional on Ash Wednesday. Who is this shadowy figure threatening to do "pure evil", and why does he know so much about John's past? What might this encounter have to do with the murders terrorising the city, with the tabloid press fuelling fear and mistrust. John is torn between his obligation to respect the seal of the confessional, and the need to defend himself against mounting suspicion. As the tension grows, the reader is drawn into a world of altered realities in which nothing is quite what it seems. Why is John so afraid to confront his past, and what does he have to do with the murders?
