Synopsis

Bern, 1945

Charming Jewish spy Gero Gaevernitz is good at keeping secrets. But lately, he’s been struggling to hide his love for his enigmatic boss, U.S. intelligence station chief Allen Dulles.

As World War II draws to a close, Gero and Allen receive a risky offer: Karl Wolff, an SS General in Northern Italy, wants to negotiate a surrender with the Allies, hoping to save his skin. This is the start of ‘Operation Sunrise’, a series of high-stakes meetings in supposedly neutral Switzerland, with Gero as the main negotiator. From the start, Gero and Allen imagine ‘Sunrise’ turned into a Hollywood movie, with Karl Wolff as the hero who spared the lives of a million soldiers. But can they create a simple narrative out of one of the darkest chapters in the twentieth century? And if so, at what cost?

Set between 1945 and 1969 in Switzerland, Italy, Ithaca N.Y. and Germany, Surrender is based on the true story of ‘Operation Sunrise’, exploring both its untold secrets and its strange aftermath.
