Phonology: A Reader

Labels such as "Autosegmental Phonology", "Multidimensional Phonology", "Dependency Phonology", "Governemt Phonology", "Non-Linear Phonology", "Metrical Phonology", "Optimality Theory", "Theory of Constraints and Repair Strategies", "Declarative Phonology" and "Laboratory Phonology" give the impression that the field of phonology is highly fragmented. The purpose of this reader is to introduce the field to show how, in fact, most of these frameworks are closely related and "generative" in the broadest sense of the word. Providing an introduction to current debates as reflected in the journals and publications on phonology today, Jacques Durand begins by outlining the main trends in modern phonology and situating each paper within these trends. There are three broad sections to the reader: Features, Geometry and Gestures; Sonority, Syllable and Skeletal Structures; and Rules, Constraints, Levels and Derivations. Each paper is preceded by a short, contextualizing introduction which suggests preparatory and further readings.
