Synopsis
This text re-examines the work John Piper was officially commissioned during the Second World War and puts it context with work from pre-war and post-war years. Examples of Piper's work included in the book are his theatre designs, architectural paintings, the Recording Britain, his war art, neo-romanticism and Welsh landscape paintings. This publication also features other forms of Piper's work from the 1940's such as his writings and criticism, his designs for film posters and book jackets, photographs, exhibition catalogues, sketch books and manuscript letters. The book is an accompaniment to an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, London in October 2000.
