Hypermedia as a Student Tool: A Guide for Teachers
Synopsis
This teacher guide and activity book helps students build hypermedia skills as they learn in subject areas across the curriculum. Using the technology of computers to engage students, the book offers a variety of learning projects for language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and foreign language. Based on the active involvement of students in the learning process, these activities also promote co-operative and collaborative learning experiences. Lessons cover topics ranging from poetry and word problems to tropical rain forests and mapping. Student directions are provided for at least one hypermedia programme for each of the computers used in schools: HyperScreen (Scholastic) for the Apple IIe/GS computer; HyperStudio for AppleIIGS; HyperCard, HyperStudio, and Digital Chisel for the Macintosh; Linkway Live and Multimedia Scrapbook for the IBM and Windows; and SuperLink for Windows. The authors also show how a variety of hypermedia programs operate, provide instructional strategies, and describe how to create effective learning environments. Appendices provide assessment tools, a reference and resource list, planning sheets and teacher support materials.
Through these activities, students can become expert hypermedia authors and designers. They can also increase their visual literacy, communication, and design skills. The classroom-tested lessons can be adapted to a variety of teaching styles and curriculum needs.
