Humanrightization: Contributions to a Theory of Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies
Synopsis
Actors in migration societies frequently mobilize human rights when striving for the inclusion of migrants – as a legal argument, a political claim, or a maxim of ethics. The research group »Human Rights Discourse in Migration Societies« (MeDiMi) examines this ›humanrightization‹ of discursive practices: How do human rights, law, semantics, narratives, and images operate within migration-related conflicts? What are the social conditions for these processes to unfold? How are legal, political, and everyday practices entangled? And what does this tell us about the potential power and limits of human rights in the context of migration? Through legal analysis, social science research, and cultural studies, the contributors to this volume propose a new social theory of human rights discourse in migration societies.
