Synopsis

When “discourse” is increasingly reduced to messages that are as short and pithy as possible—and the corresponding emotional reactions to them—the formation of opinion devolves into mere expression of opinion; dialogue and debate take a back seat, leaving behind statements and concepts that are contested—not to achieve understanding, but to mark one’s allegiance. Conflicts arise not only in the exchange of ideas, but already within language itself—when terms shape reality, harden positions, and thereby determine what can still be said or negotiated at all. In light of this development, we are announcing “Negotiating Humanity” as the theme of the Ars Electronica Festival 2026: both an invitation and a necessity to find ways to conduct the negotiation of what it means to be human in an increasingly polarized present in a democratic and peaceful manner. Ars Electronica sees itself as an infrastructure for negotiation: not as a neutral authority, but as a framework that enables openness and within which art makes ambivalence visible, shifts perspectives, and keeps tensions manageable without hastily resolving them. In this way, the festival becomes a place where unambiguity is not established, but rather the capacity for democratic discourse is strengthened under conditions of growing complexity. Europe’s largest festival for art, technology, and society will once again bring together artists, scientists, developers, designers, visionaries, entrepreneurs, and activists from around the world to present their work and visions.
