From Protest to Power

Do social movements offer a path forward for a left facing another round of defeats? Can a new crop of movements overcome the traditional failure of such forces to leave organizational legacies? How can base-building and mass mobilization strengthen struggles on the terrain of the state – helping to avoid narrow electoralism and build momentum toward radical change?

The 2027 Socialist Register offers a new perspective on building the constellation of forces needed to advance a genuine alternative to working class immiseration and ecological breakdown. It will address four central questions:

• What does working class leadership look like today given the structure, character, and political role of social movements?
• How has the relationship between movements and parties, states, unions, and NGOs changed?
• How is the growth of social movements related to the decline of membership organizations?
• How can social movements grapple with the challenges of internationalism?
